NBC’s Nov. 27 announcement that it would begin referring to the conflict in Iraq as a “civil war” added more fuel to a debate within the news media about the semantics of the coverage. Is the violence in Iraq an “insurgency” against occupying forces?

As of Nov. 25 the war in Iraq lasted longer than the U.S. involvement in WWII. The Iraq war began on March 19, 2003, with the United States bombing Baghdad. Only a few months later on May 1, Bush declared the major combat operation of the war over. He announced this on an aircraft carrier with a "Mission Accomplished" banner.
