An allegation a former Sydney Morning Herald crime reporter had a prohibited weapon during an argument outside a Sydney hotel has been withdrawn. Stephen John Gibbs, 34, faces a charge of assault after an argument with a journalist from a rival newspaper in Surry Hills in July last year.

The man accused of murdering Johanne Hatty 23 years ago has told a Sydney court there was "absolutely no way" he was responsible for the crime. Testifying at his Supreme Court trial on Thursday, David Graham Fleming said he was in Queensland when the 24-year-old was strangled on February 18, 1984.

Alice Springs is awash with violence and requires Australian Federal Police (AFP) assistance, says an alderman for the desert town. Sameh Habib will put forward the proposal to involve the AFP in restoring law and order at a council meeting on Monday night.
