Pierre Laphonso Whitney, 46, of the 400 block of 9th Street NE and another man were allegedly stabbed in the upper body and found in the parking lot of the restaurant located in the 3600 block of Bladensburg Road, according to a news release from Prince George’s County Police, who arrived about 3:45 a.m.

Armed robberies are up 56 percent in 2006 compared to 2005. The county had 56 in 2006 and 36 in 2005. The 2006 numbers are according to the annual ‘‘Uniform Crime Report,” a preliminary report that gives Maryland crime statistics and is due to come out by early summer.

Police shut down the clubs last week after claiming that they had become magnets for violent crime. County Executive Jack B. Johnson and Police Chief Melvin High said dozens of assaults, robberies, homicides and other acts of violence were reported near these clubs in 2006.

On March 22, police arrested Michael Stennett, 34, of Bowie and charged him with first degree murder in the death of Antoine Allen Turner, 34, of Saville Lane. The crime was committed on February 21, when Turner was found by police in the 3300 block of Saville Lane suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Kelvin Jackson, 42, of the 500 block of Cedarleaf Avenue was taken to an area hospital, but died shortly afterward, according to a news release from police. Police said Jackson was suffering from gunshot wounds when they arrived about 9:15 p.m.

With the violent crime rate increasing, such flawed legislation would only encourage criminals to continue committing violent crimes that under normal circumstances warrant and deserve the death penalty.
